Thula Thula, WHERE ELEPHANTS REMEMBER

with Joan Ranquet

September 1st – 9th, 2026

What if the elephants you’ve only read about actually remembered you?

This isn’t another safari. This is nine days in Zululand, South Africa, standing in the presence of the famous elephant herd from “The Elephant Whisperer” – the ones who walked for 12 hours through the bush to mourn Lawrence Anthony when he died. The ones who somehow knew. The ones who remember.

And here’s what nobody tells you about meeting elephants who have their own story, their own knowing, their own grief and joy: they see you right back.

You’ve been feeling it for a while now. This pull toward something deeper with animals. You stop scrolling when elephant videos pop up. You’ve probably read “The Elephant Whisperer” twice. You know in your bones that animals are conscious, feeling, sovereign beings – but somewhere along the way, you stopped trusting that you could actually communicate with them in a meaningful way.

What if that knowing you have isn’t weird? What if it’s actually a gift you’re meant to develop?

Thula Thula isn’t just about seeing elephants. It’s about remembering who you are in their presence. It’s about learning to trust what you receive. It’s about becoming the kind of human who doesn’t just observe wildlife – you become a steward, an advocate, a voice for those who desperately need allies right now.

WHY THULA THULA?

Thula Thula means “peace and tranquility” in Zulu, and that’s exactly what you’ll find on this 4,500-hectare private game reserve in the heart of Zululand. But the peace isn’t empty – it’s full of presence.

This is where Lawrence Anthony rescued a “rogue” herd of elephants destined to be shot. This is where he rehabilitated them, lived among them, and proved that elephants never forget. When Lawrence died in March 2012, his elephants walked through the bush to his home to pay their respects – and they returned every year on the anniversary of his death for three years running.

His widow, Françoise Malby-Anthony, continues his conservation legacy, and she’s opened the doors for us to meet these remarkable beings who have become ambassadors for elephant consciousness worldwide.

You’ll meet the descendants of that original herd – including the matriarchs and young ones who carry forward the wisdom of survival, trust, and deep connection.

WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT ?

Look, you can book a safari anywhere. You can see elephants from a Land Rover and check it off your bucket list. But that’s not why you’re here.

You’re here because you want to FEEL something. You want to stand in the presence of these ancient souls and have them look you in the eye. You want to learn how to read their energy, understand their communication, and maybe – just maybe – have an experience that cracks you wide open and reminds you why you’ve always been drawn to animals in the first place.

This trip includes:

  • Daily game drives with experienced rangers who know this land and these animals intimately
  • Animal communication sessions with Joan, learning to receive and trust the messages elephants and other wildlife are sending
  • Energy healing practices you can use with animals (and yourself)
  • Time at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, witnessing conservation in action
  • Small group intimacy (limited to 12 participants) so you actually have space to process what you’re experiencing
  • Opportunities to connect with the Zulu culture and learn from indigenous wisdom keepers

And here’s what’s NOT included: judgment about being “too sensitive,” eye rolls about animal communication, or any BS about animals being “less than.” Everyone on this trip is there because they KNOW animals have consciousness, agency, and wisdom to share.

YOUR GUIDE: JOAN RANQUET

Joan Ranquet isn’t just taking you on a safari. She’s been communicating with animals for over 25 years, teaching thousands of students, and writing bestselling books about energy healing for animals. She’s a TedX speaker who’s made it her life’s work to help people like you trust the connection you have with animals.

Joan has worked with everything from shelter dogs to wild elephants, from horses with behavioral issues to cats with chronic illness. She’s seen it all, and she knows how to create the container for you to have your own direct experience – not just hear about hers.

She combines animal communication, energy healing, chakra work, and a healthy dose of humor about our quirky animal-empath ways. If you’ve ever felt like the weirdo who “just knows” what an animal is thinking or feeling, you’re going to feel right at home with Joan.

THE EXPERIENCE

September in South Africa is spring – the bush is awakening, baby animals are being born, and the weather is perfect (warm days, cool nights, and it’s malaria-free).

You’ll stay at the luxury Elephant Safari Lodge or Tented Camp, where nyala antelope wander freely around the grounds and you fall asleep to the sounds of the African bush. The food is incredible – a fusion of local Zulu cuisine and gourmet international dishes. You’ll dine under the stars in the boma, sharing stories of the day’s encounters around the fire.

Each day includes two game drives in open Land Rovers with professional rangers who know where to find elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard, giraffe, zebra, and over 350 species of birds. But between the drives, you’re working with Joan on deepening your animal communication skills, clearing your own energetic blocks, and learning how to hold space for animals without projecting your own stuff onto them (yes, we all do this).

You’ll have time at Mkhulu Dam – Lawrence Anthony’s favorite spot where he would meet with his elephants. It’s a place of profound peace and, honestly, a little bit of magic.

And if the elephants choose to come close? If Nana or one of the other matriarchs looks you directly in the eye? That’s a moment that will change you. That’s the moment you’ve been waiting for.

WHO THIS IS FOR?

This trip is for you if:

  • You’ve been feeling called to deepen your relationship with animals but don’t know how
  • You’re ready to learn animal communication from someone who actually knows what they’re doing
  • You want to be in the presence of elephants who have their own incredible story
  • You’re done with surface-level experiences and ready for something that actually matters
  • You understand that animals are sovereign beings and you want to honor them as such
  • You’re willing to look at your own patterns and projections so you can show up more clearly
  • You’re ready to go from being a traveler to being a steward

This trip is NOT for you if:

  • You just want a vacation (book a regular safari)
  • You think animal communication is “woo woo” (it’s not for everyone)
  • You’re not willing to do your own inner work
  • You need luxury above all else (it’s beautiful, but this is bush camp living)

FROM TRAVELER TO STEWARD

Here’s what we’re really doing here: we’re creating allies for wildlife. When you come back from Thula Thula, you won’t just have photos and memories. You’ll have a relationship with this land, these elephants, this story. You’ll become an advocate, a voice, a reminder to others that these beings are worth protecting.

The planet is losing species faster than ever before. Elephants are under threat from poaching, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict. But when you’ve stood in the presence of these ancient beings, when you’ve felt their wisdom and their grief and their hope – you can’t un-know that. You become someone who cares enough to speak up, to donate, to share, to protect.

That’s the real transformation. Not just what happens TO you on this trip, but what you become willing to do BECAUSE of this trip.
